When we talk about behaviour, it is important to remember that behaviour is communication.
Often, what looks like “challenging behaviour” is a sign that someone is feeling overwhelmed, uncertain, anxious, or unsafe.
One of the most powerful and often overlooked tools for supporting regulation and wellbeing is consistency.
Why Predictability Matters
The human nervous system thrives on predictability. When we know what is happening next, our brain can relax. When things feel uncertain or chaotic, our stress response is more likely to activate.
For children, young people, and adults — particularly those who experience anxiety, trauma, neurodivergence, or disability — unpredictability can feel overwhelming. Without clear structure, even small changes can trigger stress responses such as:

📍 Clear transitions: Giving advance notice before moving between activities (“In five minutes, we will pack up and have lunch”) helps the nervous system prepare.
💬 Preparing for change: When changes are unavoidable, explaining them in advance and offering reassurance can reduce anxiety.
🤝 Consistent responses from adults: When caregivers and support staff respond in similar, predictable ways, individuals feel safer and more secure.
📅 Daily anchors: Consistent morning and evening routines provide stability, even when the rest of the day varies.
